Australian Films of the Year – 2024

Peter Malone MSC 6 January 2025

Australian Catholics film reviewers Peter Malone, Peter W Sheehan and Ann Rennie have chosen their best Australian film of 2024. See the citation below.

Force of Nature – The Dry 2, starring Eric Bana, Anna Torv and Deborra-Lee Furness, has been selected as the Best Australian film of 2024 for its dramatisation of human values.

The film is based on Jane Harper's 2017 novel. The beauty of the natural world, so distinctive in Australia, is excellently captured by the film’s cinematography, and Eric Bana excels in scenes of self-reflection that distinguishes his style of bringing Harper’s work so compellingly to the cinema screen.

In the quality of direction, acting and cinematography, the film brings issues of Indigenous concern to the cinema screen for attention and debate, and the film is highly recommended.

In 2024, we commend the significance of Indigenous themes in several other films:
Kid Snow – director Paul Goldman
Like My Brother – directors Sal Balharrie and Danielle MacLean
Runt – director John Sheedy
The Moogai – director Jon Bell
Under Streetlights – director Danielle Loy
