Unguarded moments: Sharing Christ's table

When we gather together to celebrate the sacrament of the Eucharist in commemoration of the Last Supper we are invited to partake of the body and blood of Christ. At this table, the main ingredient is also love, the love of God for his people, which transforms the bread and wine through the mystery of transubstantiation.

In the gospels, food is understood as a necessity, is used as a sign of charity, is often discussed symbolically and ultimately is transformed sacramentally. Food is at the heart of the simplest petition we make in the Lord’s Prayer – we ask for ‘daily bread’, and it means the necessities of life.
