Reflection questions and activities for 'AC Classroom: Dreaming of a different future'

Read the article 'AC Classroom: Dreaming of a different future' and answer the following questions. Then share your answers in pairs, small groups or in a classroom discussion.

1. Why do you think Fatima dreams of a future where, ‘everyone will live in mansions… And people will be able to travel anywhere in the world without a passport…’? What does this tell you about Fatima?

2. What do you worry about? How is it different from what you imagine 11-year-old Fatima worries about?

3. Why do you think programs like the African Reading Club are important to the students who receive tutoring there? Why are programs like this important to Australia?

4. Kate says, ‘My Reading Club experience taught me anyone can help to deliver social justice.’ Have you ever been involved in social justice? What was your experience?

5. How would Kate fighting for the Reading Club build confidence and self-belief in the students?


1. What if you were a refugee? Imagine you are a refugee who has just moved to Australia with your family. Write a short story or monologue about your experience immigrating to Australia. What are your hopes and fears for the future? What would you need to feel at home in your new community? What is your impression of Australians and Australia? Why would a program like the African Reading Club be important to you? Why do you think it’s important for the federal government to fund it?

When you’re finished, read your story to the class.

2. Dreaming of a different future: What’s your dream for a different future for refugees in Australia? Write a letter to your MP sharing your dream for how Australia could welcome refugees.

For younger students

A world with no borders: Imagine a world with no borders and where no one needs passports to travel. Using old magazines, pictures, words and symbols put together a collage of what you imagine this world would be like. Then, write a description of your picture or if you’re inspired a poem to go along with it. 

When you’re finished, share your collage with your class or hang it up in your classroom!
