Young Journalist Award winners 2018

23 August 2018

Voices of hopeMore than 700 students entered this year’s award which asked students to go out and interview ‘voices of hope’. They identified a range of people in the community who are inspirational in their efforts to give voice to charities, the marginalised and, importantly, to the ordinary work carried out by so many people for the betterment of society.

There was appreciation of those who worked in health and the police, acknowledgment of the obstacles refugees faced and their contribution to community, as well as numerous examples of religious and non-religious who worked with marginalised communities. There was also extensive appreciation of family members and teachers as inspirational leaders. Australian Catholics editor Michael McVeigh was impressed with the range of people chosen for the interviews and the efforts students made to write their articles in a journalistic style.

‘Every student should be congratulated for the work they did. My fellow judges: Eureka Street/Australian Catholics editorial consultant Fr Andrew Hamilton SJ; Australian Catholics assistant editor Michele Frankeni, and I, found it very difficult to select the winners from hundreds of excellent entries.’

Mr McVeigh thanked Australian Catholic University for its continuing major sponsorship, and prize sponsors Penguin Random House and Sharpie/Paper Mate. Winners and runners-up in each section can be found in this edition of Australian Catholics. These stories, as well as those that received honourable mentions, will also be available at
