Socktober kicks goals for good

1 September 2022

Sport has the power to bring people together from different backgrounds and under trying circumstances.

Sport is much more than an exercise in individual fulfilment. It also can effect actual positive change in the world.

Catholic Mission’s ‘Socktober for Mission Month’, which connects students to the global work of mission throughout World Mission Month, has this notion at its heart. Socktober embeds the values of Pope Francis’ Sport at the Service of Humanity. And, like soccer, which is a central theme of the program, the aim of Socktober is straightforward; it kicks goals for good.

Ellie Brownlow, Faith in Action Leader at Our Lady of Lourdes Seven Hills, says the resources available for teachers make it easier than ever to encourage students to make a difference in their world.

For students and their families, the mission is even easier: Sign up with a parent, pick a goal package, kick the goals and share the student’s page with family and friends to seek sponsorship. The funds raised through this year’s program will help to support families in Ethiopia facing malnutrition and food insecurity. Through Socktober, students will learn about infants like Ajani in the rural village of Emdibir, and how his survival might rely on the goats that the local parish is hoping to purchase for their farm.

If you’re not on the team sheet yet, get started today. Head to socktober.org.au/register and sign your school or child up to kick goals for good in 2022.
