Prayers of the people: Second Sunday in Advent Year A – 8 December

28 November 2019

Introductory reflection

Matthew’s portrait of John the Baptist is dramatically sketched: wilderness-based, austerely dressed, on a survival diet, preaching a fierce message, passionate with messianic fervour.

Few of us, even now, would relish a confrontation with such an uncompromising truth-teller. Especially when we are busy with end-of-year engagements, Christmas shopping and holiday planning. But if we are brave enough to venture an encounter with this challenging prophet, we might find ourselves liberated from the burden of false priorities and graced with new insight into the divine dream for humankind.

It’s for this that we were plunged into the turbulent waters of baptism and raised reborn in the power of the Spirit.

The week’s prayer focus

For children confirmed this year, that they may treasure the gifts of the Holy Spirit and grow strong in faith.

Sample intercessions

These intercessions are offered for selected use at Sunday Mass in the parish along with those that express local needs and concerns.
