Prayers of the people: Second Sunday in Advent Year A – 8 December

28 November 2019

Introductory reflection

Matthew’s portrait of John the Baptist is dramatically sketched: wilderness-based, austerely dressed, on a survival diet, preaching a fierce message, passionate with messianic fervour.

Few of us, even now, would relish a confrontation with such an uncompromising truth-teller. Especially when we are busy with end-of-year engagements, Christmas shopping and holiday planning. But if we are brave enough to venture an encounter with this challenging prophet, we might find ourselves liberated from the burden of false priorities and graced with new insight into the divine dream for humankind.

It’s for this that we were plunged into the turbulent waters of baptism and raised reborn in the power of the Spirit.

The week’s prayer focus

For children confirmed this year, that they may treasure the gifts of the Holy Spirit and grow strong in faith.

Sample intercessions

These intercessions are offered for selected use at Sunday Mass in the parish along with those that express local needs and concerns.

Dear friends, baptised in Christ and fired with the Holy Spirit, we set our hearts on the coming of God’s reign. In faith and hope let us pray for the needs of the world.

  1. We pray for world leaders who incite violence and division. May they renounce unjust aggression and uphold the human rights of all people. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  2. We pray for the prophets charging us to care for God’s creation. May we heed their call to conversion and repent of our wasteful and destructive ways. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  3. We pray for the young Australians taking part in this week’s Catholic Youth Festival in Perth. May they be filled with the joy of the gospel and the spirit of mission. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  4. We pray for the Discernment and Writing Groups preparing for next year’s Plenary Council. May they work with boldness and freedom under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  5. We pray for communities dealing with extreme water shortages and dangerous fire conditions. May the whole country unite in their support. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  6. We pray for the first peoples of this land. May their hopes for full participation in the life of the nation be welcomed and fulfilled. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  7. We pray for graduating students seeking to discern their path in life. May they find ways of putting their gifts at the service of the community. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  8. We pray for ourselves at this busy time of the year. May Mary lead us through an Advent of quiet prayer and trusting faith. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  9. We pray for the recently deceased . . . and for those whose anniversary of death occurs around this time. May they inherit the kingdom prepared for them. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.

God of our past, present and future, you bless us with this season of promise. Open our minds and hearts to receive the gift of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
