Prayers of the people: Easter Sunday Year C, 21 April

11 April 2019

Introductory reflection

Those best placed to appreciate the grace of Easter day are those who have journeyed with Jesus through the great three days of paschal observance. The opening chant on Holy Thursday evening epitomised the mystery: We should glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, for he is our salvation, life and resurrection; through him we are saved and made free. This mystery we have celebrated in a wealth of ritual: in foot-washing and table fellowship, in solemn story-telling and cross-raising, in the interplay of light, word, water, bread and wine. Now it is the first day of the week. This is the day the Lord has made, let us be glad and rejoice!

The week’s prayer focus

For the world-wide church, that it may be a radiant sign of hope for the whole of humanity.

Sample intercessions

These intercessions are offered for selected use at Sunday Mass in the parish alongside those that express local needs and concerns.

  3. We pray for minority Christian communities in hostile environments. May they hold fast to their faith in Christ’s victory over sin and death. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  4. We pray for all who have been baptised this Easter. May they be gladly welcomed into the life of their local faith community. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  5. We pray for all who are confined in prisons, detention centres and refugee camps. May they not lose freedom of heart, mind and spirit. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  6. We pray for the nation of Australia. May Anzac Day unite the country in the cause of peace and justice for all. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  7. We pray for families away for an Easter holiday break. May they enjoy their time together and return home safely. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  8. We pray for our parish community. May our sharing in this Easter eucharist deepen our desire to live the gospel ever more fully. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  9. We pray for the recently deceased . . . and for those whose anniversary of death occurs around this time. May they rise with Christ to the fullness of life. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.

Presider

God of life, you never cease to call us into the mystery of redemption in Christ. Help us to cherish the freedom that is ours as your newborn daughters and sons. We ask this through Christ our risen Lord.
