How do we reconcile with creation? Questions and activities

Michele Frankeni  |  14 February 2019

Read Making peace with nature in the Autumn 2019 edition of Australian Catholics and take part in the following questions and activities.

  1. Finbarr Horgan (Fionn) believes that as people of faith we have a duty to care for the Earth. What in Catholic teaching reinforces his belief?
  2. He says the real environmental catastrophes are in poor countries. Why would that be? Have you seen anything recently on the news about environmental disasters? Did where they happen confirm what Fionn says?
  3. What does Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’ say about economic growth and industry?
  4. Why is the encyclical important?
  5. One of the things Laudato si’ canvasses is the loss of biodiversity. There has been some important predictions about insect biodiversity in the news recently. What were they?
  6. What can you, as an individual, and part of a wider community – family, school, organisation, neighbourhood – do to reconcile with creation?

Research an overseas country where climate change is posing a serious threat to already marginalised communities – perhaps a community threatened by rising seas in the Pacific, or deforestation in South America. Find out what effect it’s having in these communities. In groups, put together a commercial on behalf of these communities, aimed at informing Australians about the threat. You could film it or perform it for the class.

Spend some time in nature. Go for a hike in nearby bushland. Ride your bike along a trail. Stroll in a park. Walk along the seashore but while you’re there, pick up at least three pieces of rubbish and dispose of them.

Do an audit of your personal habits. Do you reduce, reuse, recycle? Do you take a coffee cup, stainless steel straw, plastic bag with you?

Clean up Australia Day starts next month. How can you and your school get involved?

For the younger students

Teachers read or summarise the article Making peace with nature. Talk with them about the importance of having green spaces to play, clean water and air. Ask the students to sit quietly outside either at home or at school. Get them to draw or describe a bug or plant they saw.
