Read the article ‘Unguarded moments: An immaculate conception of leadership’ and answer the following questions. Then share your answers in pairs, small groups or in a classroom discussion.
1. What makes someone a leader? How do you define leadership?
2. Why might truthfulness be an important characteristic in a leader?
3. Why do you think we need Mother Mary as a role model now? What does she teach us?
4. What is the Magnificat? Where can you find it? After reading and spending time with the Magnificat, what does the Magnificat tell you about Mary?
5. Ann Rennie says, ‘All Hail Mary. We need her and we need her now!’ Why do you think she writes this? Do you agree with her?
1. Gospel Comic Strip: Create a comic strip showing how Mother Mary was a true leader and how her love and actions inspired generations of Christians.
2. Memorise the Magnificat: students can break up into small groups or individually memories the Magnificat. Then perform it for the class.
After the performance teachers can ask students what they learned about Mother Mary and God from memorising the Magnificat.
3. Modern Magnificat: Write a modern and respectful version of the Magnificat. Take each line or stanza and think of a creative and modern way to restate what Mary is saying.
When you are finished, each student can share their Modern Magnificat with the class.
For younger students
Before summarise or reading the article, ‘Unguarded moments: An immaculate conception of leadership’, teachers can lead the class in a discussion about leadership and especially about Christian leadership.
Students can then write a poem about what Mother Mary means to them. If there is time, students can neatly write their poem on a piece of white art paper and decorate it.
