The Advent Journey – Reflections and resources

05 December 2018

Marking the beginning of Advent, Pope Francis ‘invites us’ to a vigilant commitment to the needs of others.

At his weekly Sunday Angelus prayer earlier this week, he said ‘the time was appropriate for people to open their hearts, to ask concrete questions on how and for whom we spend our life.’

There are a number of resources available to help you celebrate Advent in a prayerful and heartfelt way.

The Jesuit Educate Magis site includes a number of use resources for schools to prepare for Advent, including a Jesuit Refugee Service/USA-produced Advent Calendar and Sacred Space, run by the Irish Jesuits that centres on the ‘O’ Antiphons.

Caritas Australia has produced a number of resources that invite individuals, schools and parishes to journey with it as it learns, acts and prays for a more just and fair world.

The Columban Mission Society have a free online Advent Resource – Pathways: Hope for the Journey to aid in teaching and preaching.

Watch Busted Halo’s video – Advent in Two Minutes.

Jesuit Communication and Australian Catholics sister publication – Madonna magazine – has its own Advent resource – The Season of Joy. Or check out the Australian Catholics’ Advent liturgy.

December is the season of carols. You’ll hear them played in the streets, parks and shopping centres. But do you know your Christmas carols? Try the quiz and see how well you know ‘Joy to the World’, ‘O Come, O Come Emmanuel’ and ‘Silent Night’.
