Catholic Teacher: Faith formation resources for Term Two 2020

Michael McVeigh  |  30 April 2020

We’re planning to cover a range of topics in Catholic Teacher this term – drawing on some more articles from our Autumn edition, followed by some great features from our Winter edition – which will commemorate the fifth anniversary of Laudato Si’ with a focus on ‘The cry of the earth, the cry of the poor’.

Here’s an outline of what we have in store for you in Catholic Teacher in Term Two.

30 April – Putting people first

We interview Catholic Social Services’ Chief Executive Ursula Stephens about her passion for social justice – how it emerged from her family upbringing, and how it influences her in her choices as a leader. We’ll also explore what it means to ‘put people first’ as a leader, particularly when making decisions in difficult times – such as during our current crisis.

For AC+ subscribers, we feature some articles and resources for Mother’s Day.

7 May – Laudato Si’ Week

In a preview of our Winter edition, as Catholics prepare to celebrate Laudato Si’ Week later this month, one of our writers introduces readers to ‘integral ecology’, one of the main ideas to emerge out of that landmark document from Pope Francis. Why is it impossible to separate the ‘cry of the earth’ from ‘the cry of the poor’?

For AC+ subscribers, we feature some more articles and resources for Laudato Si’ Week (16 to 24 May).

14 May – Indigenous perspectives on Laudato Si’

As we begin Laudato Si’ Week, we hear what the Church’s recent statements around ecology and indigenous peoples mean to Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Our activities will explore what can be done to create a more inclusive and welcoming Church for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

For AC+ subscribers, we feature some resources for National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June).

21 May – Our relationship with creation

We speak with an Australian Catholic priest who spent five years with indigenous communities in the Amazon region. We reflect on the effect our way of life has on the environment, and how different cultures might help us find better ways to live in communion with each other and creation.

For AC+ subscribers, we’ll share some resources for World Environment Day (5 June).

28 May – Exploring Catholic Social Teaching

One of our young writers considers how the themes of Catholic Social Teaching can be found in some popular Young Adult fiction works. Our activities will encourage students to learn more about Catholic Social Teaching, and find other books or films that engage with these themes.

For AC+ subscribers, we’ll share some more resources on Catholic Social Teaching from our archives.

4 June – Becoming more reflective

One of our columnists writes to Australian tennis star Ash Barty. Our activities will consider what makes a good role model, and what tools might be available to help us become more reflective in the way we think and act.

For AC+ subscribers, we’ll share some fun activities for younger students from our archives.

11 June – Refugee Week

We explore the stories of refugees in Australia, and consider how we might better offer protection and care for people who come to our shores seeking asylum.

For AC+ subscribers, we’ll share some more resources for Refugee Week (14 – 20 June)

18 June – Social justice saints

We’ll share the stories of some saintly social justice role models, and provide students with a fun new game to help students learn what it takes to become a social justice hero.

For AC+ subscribers, we’ll share some more resources on saints.

25 June – Winter time

Reflecting on how winter effects us as individuals and as a society. What can we do to keep connected to God and each other during this time of year?

For AC+ subscribers, we’ll share some reflections and resources for families and students to engage with over the winter school holiday break.
