Catholic Teacher: Faith formation resources for Term One 2020

Michael McVeigh  |  05 February 2020

Our Autumn 2020 edition will focus on ‘Growing into Leadership’ – exploring how we can become leaders in our community following the example of Jesus, and learning to discern how to make choices that benefit everyone.

Here’s an outline of what we have in store for you in Catholic Teacher in Term One.

6 February – Bushfires and Stewardship of Creation

Writer Catherine Marshall reflects on the impact of the recent bushfires on our natural environment, and in particular the creatures that live there. Our classroom reflections and resources will explore the vulnerability of our natural habitats, how our faith calls us to respond to environmental emergencies, what lessons can we draw from the recent bushfires, and how can we become better stewards of nature.

For AC+ subscribers, we feature some resources on environmental stewardship from our archives.

13 February – What does it mean to be a school leader?

Lincoln Igravalle, 2019 Victorian VCE Leader of the Year, offers some advice for 2020 school leaders. Our classroom reflections and resources will explore some of the tasks and challenges school leaders face, some leadership role models from our religious tradition, and encourage students to put together a job profile of a faithful, just school leader.

For AC+ subscribers, we feature some articles on Christian leadership role models from our archives.

20 February – How we approach Lent

Columnist Kate Moriarty provides some different examples of how to approach Lent. Our classroom reflections and resources will encourage students to learn more about the history of this liturgical season, and think creatively about what they might do to get closer to God during Lent this year.

For AC+ subscribers, we feature some articles offering ideas and activities to enrich the Lenten season for students, staff and families.

27 February – Raising leaders of hope

Our feature article will explore the Caritas Just Leadership program, and how young people can be at the forefront of making a better world. Our classroom reflections and resources will engage with Caritas’ Project Compassion campaign, and explore creative ways to change people’s attitudes around social justice issues.

For AC+ subscribers, we’ll feature some more articles to help prepare for the Easter season.

5 March – What kind of ‘influencer’ do we want to be?

In our featured article, Ann Rennie look at what it means to be an ‘influencer’ for good. Our reflections and activities will encourage students to think about who are the ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ influencers in our society and our everyday life, and how we might become more discerning in who we listen to.

For AC+ subscribers, we’ll provide some articles exploring faith in popular culture.

12 March – Sports and leadership

In our featured article, we’ll hear from former AFL footballer Steve Lawrence about what it takes to be a leader in a sporting community. Our reflections and activities will explore the difference between building sporting communities where everyone can thrive, and those focused on winning at all costs.

For AC+ subscribers, we’ll feature some articles exploring the intersection between faith and sport, including profiles of some inspiring sportspeople.

19 March – Bible hacks: Learning through failure

In our featured article we’ll explore some Biblical stories of people who learned that failure can be an important step towards bringing us closer to God. In our reflections and activities, we’ll engage more deeply with the stories of some Biblical ‘failures’, and encourage students to reflect on how they cope with failure in their own life.

For AC+ subscribers, we’ll feature some articles and resources for Easter Week.

26 March – Leading in Jesus’ footsteps

Our featured article will explore the qualities that Jesus showed us as a leader, engaging in particular with stories from the Lenten and Easter seasons. In our reflections and activities, students will be asked to consider how the lessons from Jesus might be applied to the ‘real world’ today, and to put together a ‘Leadership Stations of the Cross’ to help people follow in Jesus’ footsteps.

For AC+ subscribers, we’ll share some articles and resources for ANZAC Day.
