Michele Frankeni  |  19 April 2018

Read the online article The Anzac spirit of service and answer the following questions. Share your answers in pairs, small groups or in a classroom discussion.

Questions

  1. What does the acronym Anzac stand for?
  2. Why do you think Nathan means when he says Anzac Day appears to stand the test of time?
  3. What does Anzac Day mean to you? Do you attend any of the marches or services held at dawn throughout the day?
  4. Do you have any personal Anzac Day traditions?
  5. How do you demonstrate the nine values in your school community?
  6. Can you think of any examples in your lives and community where you’ve seen the spirit of service?

Activities

Perhaps you’d like to organise your own Anzac Day service for the class or school. A service outline is available from https://anzacday.org.au/service-outline. See other articles in Australian Catholics for more information on Anzac Day and a liturgy.

The Australian anthem is always played but do you know the second verse? Include that in the anthem in your service.

The RSL serves returned servicemen and women by providing welfare services. Are there ways you can help the Returned Services League?

For younger students

Teachers read or summarise the article, The Anzac spirit of service. Talk about the idea of service – helping one another and how that is done in school and home. Relay the story of John Simpson and his donkey. Discuss how Jesus and the disciples served their communities.

Perhaps you’d like to share stories of service while sharing some Anzac biscuits.
