The Church’s divine comedy

31 Oct 2016 | Fr Andrew Hamilton SJ

Conversations about the Catholic Church are of many kinds: happy, sad, curious, tragic. They remind me of different TV shows we watch.

Prayer blog: Becoming peacemakers

13 Oct 2016 | Andrew Hamilton, SJ

Everyone wants peace. But equally most people find conflict more interesting than peace.

Prayer blog: The importance of awareness days

05 Oct 2016 | Fr Andrew Hamilton SJ

This week three apparently unrelated commemorative days follow one another: World Mental Health Day (10 Oct); World Homeless Day (10 Oct); International Day of the Girl Child (11 Oct). They are linked in telling us what is necessary if people are to find a home, are to enjoy mental health, and if women are to take their equal place in society.

Social justice is about more than offering charity. It’s asking questions about why people are in need in the first place.

Elbows in when wrestling sharks

22 May 2016 | Fr Andrew Hamilton

Writer Martin Flanagan once went fishing with Pat Dodson, who has recently been nominated to the Federal Senate. They hooked a three-metre hammerhead shark. Flanagan writes, ‘Dodson was matter-of-factly leaning over the side of the boat about to slap a headlock on the writhing beast when it snapped the line. Later, for my benefit, he displayed the technique he was going to employ, adding (unforgettably), "Elbows in when wrestling sharks".’

Prayer blog: When the Pope went to Lesbos

25 Apr 2016 | Andrew Hamilton

There is so much to like about Pope Francis’ journey to Lesbos. There is also so much for us as Australians to be humbled by.  He undertook his travel at a time when the people seeking protection on Lesbos began being put into enclosed camps, facing deportation to Turkey and perhaps return to the mortal danger from which they fled.

Mercy prayer: Gospel contemplation

10 Mar 2016 | Fr Andrew Hamilton SJ

Shut your eyes and imagine for a few minutes this story through Martha’s eyes. How would you feel about Mary if you were Martha? How would you feel about Jesus? Now let someone read aloud Martha’s words to Jesus and his reply. Sit quietly again for a few minutes.

Explorations: The business of relationships

10 Mar 2016 | Andrew Hamilton

Relationships are more than transactions where one thing is exchanged for another. Ideally, relationships are places where people are generous in what they give of themselves, and are also generous in what they forgive in others.

Prayer blog: The Name of God is Mercy

01 Feb 2016 | Andrew Hamilton SJ

The best spiritual guides both comfort and provoke us. Pope Francis is no exception.

A short history of reconciliation

26 Jan 2016 | Fr Andrew Hamilton SJ

While the forgiveness of sins was a part of the earliest Church, the sacrament of reconciliation took some time to develop.
