The 2011 Census data has provided a wonderful insight into the commitment and growth of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics in Australia.
The number of Australia’s first people identifying as Catholic has risen 7% in the past five years and most interestingly, has recorded a growth of more than 185% since 1986, making this group the youngest and fastest growing demographic in the Church. The gifts of traditional culture, including family, spirituality and expression brings a richness to the Catholic Faith.
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council (NATSICC) is buoyed by these figures. It encourages the spiritual growth of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders through the NATSICC Youth Leadership gatherings, youth-focused liturgy resources and supports attendance at Catholic youth festivals.
With this in mind, NATSICC is calling for schools and communities to consider accompanying their young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders to the 2018 NATSICC Assembly in Perth from 1-5 October.
The NATSICC Youth Office has devised a special program that is focused on unpacking faith and building strong young Catholic Leaders. Speakers include Bishop Columba Macbeth Green, Bishop Don Sproxton, the MGL youth team and the NATSICC Youth Leadership team.
