What young people want: reflections and activities

Questions

Luke Bogoni decided the best way for him to know what his students wanted from his Religious Education classes was to ask them. If you were in Luke’s class what would be the questions you want answers to?
Where do you think would be the best places to get your answers?
Is the Bible one of those places?
What other resources can you think of?
What does being Catholic mean to you?
Is God a source of strength and hope to you? In which ways?
How would you make God more relevant to you and your friends?

Activities

Plan your own RE lesson. Collect your questions from the reflection above or do a survey of students. Divide the questions among the class to research the answers. To make it easier, the questions could be allocated into themes. When presenting the questions and answers to the class, make the lesson as interactive as possible. You could have a trivia afternoon, anagrams, dramatise the answers. The idea is to have as much fun as possible . . .

For younger students

Together make a list of basic prayers and practices. Ask the children to indicate which basics they are confident in and explain that being a Catholic is a personal journey and everyone learns the basics at their own pace.
