Gaming the Gospels: Step-Up Magnificat

 |  01 February 2017

Luke 1:46-55 features Mary’s Song of Praise, the Magnificat.

Many musicians have recorded versions of this song – for example, if you have access to it you could show Michael Mangan’s version ‘My Spirit Sings’ with accompanying dance moves (in fact the lyrics of this version might be good to use in this activity – www.litmusproductions.com/index.php/lyrics). Inspired by this, get students into groups of four or five, and challenge each group to come up with a dance that expresses the different lines of Mary’s song. Let them pick some appropriate music to dance to, or you can pick it for them. It might take a few sessions to come up with the moves, and for each group to practice so they can do them together. When they’re ready, bring all the groups together for a Step Up-style dance-off (with no winners or losers, of course).
